Celebrate Earth Day with Sustainable Housing

This Friday marks 52 years since the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970

by Sara Ploetz

This Friday marks 52 years since the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970. Earth Day can trace its beginnings back to the start of environmental awareness, Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring published in 1962 and Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson. To learn more about the beginnings of Earth Day check out the official history at EARTHDAY.ORG or https://www.earthday.org/history/

LSAR is celebrating by sharing the following tips on sustainable housing for our members. Sustainable is not necessarily just solar panels on homes or “living off the grid”! When thinking about sustainable households consider taking a big picture approach to things such as purchasing locally, considering energy efficiency, size, distance to existing infrastructure (including public transportation) and yes, solar panels and geothermal.

The above approaches focus on the outside of the building but what about the smaller items? LED bulbs, composting food waste, low VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints, window placement to capture natural light and heat are all options to consider. At the end of the day, it is easy to find sustainable solutions that are right for your family and household!

LSAR’s charitable arm, the Realtors as Neighbors Foundation is celebrating Earth Day by cleaning up the City of Superior Park adopted through the Adopt-a-Park program. We will be performing clean-up activities from 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm at 18 Oakes Park on located at 1725 Oakes Avenue in Superior, WI. Please join us for a bag lunch sponsored by First American Title and celebrate Earth Day. RSVP if you would like to attend.
